What Matters Most
Unconditional love is what matters most. Unconditional love is a gift given by one person to another. It is a life force that comforts, supports and empowers. It is a healing balm for our emotional wounds, traumas and pain. Love accepts and values us for who we are, where we are and what we offer. This beautiful love is an action that is given, received and passed on to others. God is the source of this unconditional love. The Apostle Paul summed it up when he said, “the only thing that matters is faith expressing itself in love” and, “The whole law can be summed up in this one command, love your neighbor as yourself”. The most defining characteristic of a Christian is not righteousness, but the act of expressing unconditional love.
Unfortunately the American society has become distracted from the pursuit of this love by the pursuit of power, profits, position and pleasure. The result has taken a toll on our emotional health and relationships. Even though Americans experience the highest level of financial prosperity in the world our level of emotional pain continues to increase. We are more addicted, medicated, obsessive, materialist, depressed and suicidal than ever before. We are connected to more people through social media yet experience more aloneness. The COVID-19 pandemic further revealed and exacerbated a disconnection from ourselves and each other. Our isolation, rather than drawing us together has fostered a self-protective independence that hinders the expression of unconditional love. We are quicker to judge than forgive and to build walls than bridges. Our relational patterns have become more transactional, competitive and, critical. Vulnerability and humility have been lost for fear of judgement.
So where are you? Are you in self-protect mode or love mode? Fear is real but love is much more powerful. To love unconditionally is a choice we make to give of ourselves without expecting anything in return. Would you consider choosing love as your purpose in life? We have the opportunity to be unique expressions of God’s love in the world. Will you join us? Together let’s focus on what matters most, LOVE.
